Lernify is an iOS app for learning a foreign language — English, Spanish, German, Russian or Turkish. This page explains what the app collects, why, and what you can do about it.
What we collect
- Your email address and account ID. To create your account and sign you in — with an email and password, with Apple or with Google. If you sign in with Apple and choose Hide My Email, we only ever see the relay address Apple gives us. We never see your Apple or Google password. Accounts are held in Supabase Auth.
- When you try the app without an account. Choosing "Try it without an account" creates an anonymous account ID without asking for any personal details — only to count your free photos and apply the daily limit. Meanwhile your words stay on your phone; if you then create an account, they move to it. Unused anonymous accounts are deleted automatically after 30 days.
- The photos you take. A photo is sent from our server to an AI service only to recognise the object in it. If you have an account, the photo of each word you save is also stored privately on our server with your account — a copy of up to 1080 pixels on its longest side — so a new phone, a reinstall or signing in again brings it back. Only you can see these photos; nobody else ever can, your friends included. A word's photo is kept as long as the word is on your account, and all of them are deleted with your account. While you try the app without an account, your photos stay only on your phone.
- Your words, sentences, XP, streak, badges and practice history. Kept on your phone, and a copy is kept on our server with your account, so a new phone — or a reinstall — gets them back. The practice history is when you practised, for how long and the XP it earned, plus your level in each language you've learned. The photos of your words are kept with it too (see above).
- Word sets you make or add. A word set you make in the app — its name, its language, its words and their example sentences — is stored on our server with your account, so anyone you give its code or link can open it. They see the set's name, its words and your username. Sets can't be searched or browsed; the code is the only way in. You can delete a set in Passport → My sets, and its link stops working. When you add someone's set to your Passport, its words (with their example sentences) and the language you speak are sent from our server to an AI service, which writes each word's translation in your language; the translated words are then kept like any other word you've learned. When you save a set you made, its name, words and example sentences are sent from our server to the same AI service, which checks them for objectionable content before the set is published.
- Your name, level and language choice. Kept on your account, so signing in again doesn't ask for them. If you sign in with Apple or Google, the name they share with us fills in the name field the first time; you can change it in the app. Your language choice — the one you speak and the one you're learning — is also sent with each photo and each practice-dialogue request, because it decides which language the word or the dialogue is written in and which one it's translated into.
- Your Friends profile and username. Every account gets a Friends profile when it's created (people trying the app without an account don't): a username such as "cavid.4821", which you can change any time in Profile, and the name on your profile. By default anyone who knows your username can find your profile and send you a friend request, while your photo, points and badges are shown only to your friends (people you follow each other with). On the Friends screen you can change this to "Only me" or "Everyone". When you send someone a friend request, they see your name, username and photo so they can decide, whatever your setting. Your friend requests, friends and blocks are kept with your account.
- Your profile photo on Friends. The photo you set on Profile is stored on our server as a copy of up to 1080 × 1080 pixels, so it can appear on the leaderboard, in friend lists and on your card. Who sees it follows your visibility setting — only you, your friends, or everyone — plus anyone you've sent a friend request to, and never anyone you have blocked or who has blocked you. Changing or removing the photo on Profile changes or removes it on the server too.
- A notification token, if you allow notifications. Your phone's push token (an address Apple gives the app for this phone), the language the app is set to, and whether it's a test or App Store build are kept with your account, so we can tell you when someone sends you a friend request or accepts yours. We send nothing else this way, and at most one notification a day about the same person. The token is removed when you log out.
- The email you give the waitlist. If you put your address in the form on the site, we keep it for one thing: to tell you when the app is released. It stays in our own database, we don't pass it on and we don't use it for advertising. To come off the list, write to support@lernify.app and we'll delete the row.
- Reports you send. If you report someone, or a word set, we keep the report — the reason, your note if you wrote one, what was reported and your account ID — so the Lernify team can review it; an email about it goes to our support address. The person reported isn't told who sent it. Your reports are deleted with your account. Reports made about an account, and any action taken on it, are kept for up to 180 days after that account is deleted — without the account itself — so repeated abuse can still be recognised; then they are deleted too.
- A usage counter. How many photo, dialogue and word-set requests you make each day, kept with your account ID to prevent abuse. So the day's limits start again at your own midnight, the app sends your phone's time zone (such as "Asia/Baku") with those requests, and the last one is kept with your account — or, while you try the app without an account, with the phone's random ID.
- Channels and voice rooms. When you join a channel or a voice room, the other people in it see the name on your profile and — following your Friends photo setting, and never between blocked people — your profile photo, and the room keeps who is in it and each person's role (such as owner or moderator) and speaking permission. Chat messages you write there are kept on our server and deleted after 30 days, or 7 days after the room closes. Your voice is sent live from your phone to the other people through Cloudflare's real-time servers; it is never recorded or stored, by us or by them. The microphone is used only while you are in a room and have turned it on. To keep voice rooms working and their cost under control, we keep when you joined and left, how long you spoke and technical connection figures (such as delay and lost audio packets) with your account for 90 days; after that only daily totals without any account remain.
What we don't collect
- No advertising identifiers and no tracking.
- We don't sell or share your data for advertising.
- We don't read your location, contacts or other files on your device.
Services we use
- Supabase — accounts, sign-in and server functions (EU, Ireland region).
- OpenRouter, and through it Google Gemini — recognising objects in photos, writing practice dialogues, translating the words of a word set you add, and checking a word set you make before it is published.
- Resend — sending confirmation codes by email.
- Apple (Sign in with Apple) and Google (Sign in with Google) — only if you choose to sign in with them. They confirm who you are and give us your name and email address.
- Apple Push Notification service — delivering friend-request notifications to your phone, if you allow notifications. Only the notification's text and the other person's username are sent.
- This website — lernify.app is hosted on a server rented from Hostinger. Like any web server, it briefly logs each request (the IP address, the page and the time) to keep the site running and secure. Pages load the Inter font from Google Fonts, so your browser contacts Google; the waitlist form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to tell people from bots. None of this is used for advertising or tracking.
- Cloudflare Realtime — carrying voice live between the people in a channel or voice room. Audio passes through it but is not recorded or stored.
Only what those services need to do the job is sent to them.
How long we keep it
Account data is kept while the account exists. The photos of your words are kept privately as long as the word is on your account, and are deleted with your account; the profile photo you share with Friends is kept until you remove it or delete your account. Your Friends profile, friend requests, word sets and notification tokens are deleted with your account; notification tokens are also removed when you log out. Usage-counter rows are deleted with the account. Anonymous accounts made for trying the app are deleted after 30 days. Voice-room usage and connection figures are deleted after 90 days.
Deleting your data
In the app, Profile → Delete account (at the bottom of the Profile screen) removes your account and the data stored for it, the photos of your words included. Words and photos on your phone go when you delete the app. If you signed in with Apple or Google, you can also remove Lernify from your Apple Account (Sign in with Apple) or Google Account (third-party connections) settings. Children
The app isn't intended for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page and the date above updated.
